Between 11 and 13 April 2024, the Faculty of History of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” will host an international scientific conference “Researches of Ancient Thrace between Traditionality and Modernity: Theoretical Aspects and Scientific Methodology“, organized by the team of the project “Measuring Ancient Thrace” (KP-06-H50/3 of 30.11.2020).
Research on Antiquity in Bulgarian historical science has a long tradition, which began simultaneously with the foundation of Sofia University in 1888. In recent decades they have, unfortunately, been largely deprived of the scientific debate in terms of theoretical and methodological framework. The new millennium has added to the traditional disciplines of history, archaeology, numismatics and epigraphy other key aspects of an interdisciplinary approach, such as archaeometric studies and digital humanities.
The conference aims to provoke scholarly debate regarding traditional and new methodological approaches to the study of Antiquity and Ancient Thrace in particular. The discussion will be innovative for Bulgaria and the research of ancient Thracian history, insofar as such focused debates have not been held in Bulgarian historical contexts since the establishment of Thracology as a historical discipline in the early 1970s. The conference will focus on the impact of the digital age on the understanding and interpretation of ancient Thrace. Discussions will be provoked on theory and methodology in the four key disciplines of historical knowledge – ancient history, archaeology, numismatics, epigraphy, but also in archaeometric research, and their relationship to digital technologies.
The conference programme also includes a workshop on ancient forgeries, as part of the activities of the International Ancient Coins Counterfeits Scientific Network.
A separate workshop is devoted to the results achieved in the “Measuring Ancient Thrace” project and the future development of Thracology in a digital environment.
The event will be attended by approx. 70 researchers from 9 countries with 38 presentations.
The forum is financially supported by the Bulgarian Scientific Fund under the program for support of international scientific forums held in Bulgaria, project № KP-06-MNF/44 from 19.12.2023.
Opening of the conference is on 11 April 2024, at 9:30 am.
Venue: Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, Rectorate, North Wing, 2nd floor, Conference Hall.
We are looking forward to your participation in the discussions!
